The world of natural beauty can be difficult to navigate. From deciphering an ingredients list that looks like it was written in another language to forcing yourself to get past the pretty packaging and focus on the product itself, it can be easy to throw in the towel and purchase the same things you always do. But with a little bit of research, you’ll find there are plenty of beauty brands who are putting their customers’ health and well-being above everything else.
To help you get started on your natural beauty journey, we’ve found five cosmetic brands that are killing the game right now. They are all incredibly aware of what goes into their products so you can look and feel flawless.
Jessica Alba went from being a movie star of the highest caliber, to a natural beauty innovator and CEO. The Honest Company manufacturers everything from baby products to makeup to hair care. Not only do they cater to a wide array of skin tones and hair types, they ensure that all of their products will be free of parabens, paraffins, silicones, talc, petrolatum, mineral oil, and synthetic fragrances.
16-year-old Zandra Cunningham is taking the beauty industry by storm. After having bad reactions to the beauty products she would buy at the mall, the Buffalo, NY native decided to venture into entrepreneurship at just 9-years-old. She’s come a long way from selling body souffles at her local farmer’s market. She has been featured on The Today Show, Bustle, and Seventeen just to name a few, and most recently had her products sold at Paper Source stores across the country during the holidays. To top it all off, 10% of her proceeds go toward empowering girls education.
If you’re not following @glossier on Instagram, what exactly are you doing? The barely there beauty brand has somehow figured out how to extract and bottle magic. Their products highlight your best features, while still leaving you looking completely fresh-faced. Founded by Emily Weiss, a former Teen Vogue intern, who drew inspiration for her burgeoning business from her blog entitled Into the Gloss. All of their products are dermatologist tested, hypoallergenic, non-irritating, paraben free, and alcohol free, meaning their philosophy that skincare is essential and make-up in a choice will always ring true.
After suffering from eczema and her fair share of other medical issues throughout her life, 22-year-old Micaela Hoo and her mom decided to start an organic skincare company that would be safe for everyone to use. By executing a successful crowdfunding campaign that raised over $11,000, she was able to launch Drifter Organics on a much larger scale than she could have ever imagined. All of their products are certified organic by Oregon Tilth, certified cruelty-free by Leaping Bunny, gluten-free, plant-based, soy-free, vegan, paraben-free and non-GMO.
It was only a matter of time before Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop came out with a skincare line of their own. They recognize the the need for more transparency in the beauty industry and are very open about what they do and do not include in their products. A short list of some major ingredients they refuse to put in their products include fragrance, carcinogens and chemicals that act as endocrine disruptors, all of which are commonly found in beauty products on the market today. They’ve spent so much time researching this stuff, they could write a book about it (which, they already did).
