How to Not Feel Defined by Social Media

12 Instagrams That Will Make You Smile

We live in an age where everything is on the internet. What your best friend did last night, who went to that Halloween party, or who went on that exotic trip to the Caribbean are all accessible through an app and a few clicks. While social media has allowed people to express themselves in more ways than ever before, it also has its drawbacks. Social media has presented more anxiety and unhappiness within our generation. We feel as though we are defined by the number of likes and followers we have. Well, I’m here to tell you that you are worth more than a like, a follower, and a number.

Realize When You Should Take a Break

Have you ever scrolled through Instagram or Twitter just to be frustrated? Is the first thing you look at in the morning your Instagram feed? Well, you might be in need of a little social media detox. I strive to do this occasionally if I’m ever feeling overwhelmed. Simply logoff and delete the app from your phone and relax. Allow yourself to be present in the moment. You shouldn’t have to justify what someone’s picture means- a picture can mean a million different things. You shouldn’t have to feel like you need to gain more followers because your best friend has a lot of followers. Remember, most people only post the good things in their lives.

Comparison is the Thief of Joy

It’s easy to follow accounts and feel as though their lives are better than our own. They travel more often, have more luxurious clothing, and flawless skin. But behind the lens is a person, just like you, who has flaws and who is imperfect. Some days she’ll wake up with a pimple on her forehead or she’ll feel bloated after eating her favorite meal. Like you, she is striving to make herself better every day, whether she displays that publicly or not. We all want our lives to be enriched but you cannot compare your beginnings to someone else’s middle.

You Are You and No One Can Take That Away

Social media can be very overwhelming. We want validation that what we publish is good enough for our friends, our family, or our job. Your creativity is unique to you and you only. What you have to offer to the world is something that cannot be offered by anyone else. If you want to display the hike you went on, or start an Instagram for your blog, my advice is to go for it! You have nothing to lose, only something to gain. You should feel as though you can post whatever makes you happy, not whatever makes everyone else happy.

Please remember, you are worth more than a like, a follower, and a number. Go out and be the best you and channel your inner creativity!
