How To Stop Putting Others On Pedestals


Ugh, romanticization. We’ve all done it. Whether it’s an ex, a parent who’s let us down, or that one friend who seems really cool, we’ve all made the mistake of thinking of a person as more than who they are: a person. Here’s three steps you can take to stop putting others on pedestals:

Focus On You

A lot of the time, the reason we put someone else up is because we feel down on ourselves. It reinforces the idea that we are smaller than them. Crappy, right? That’s why this old habit has to die.

Remember: Everybody Poops

Okay, yeah, this is kind of gross. The point is that at the end of the day, we’re all human. We all do gross, weird, and embarrassing things. We all keep ourselves up at night thinking of past mistakes. It’s fine, we just have to admit it.

Think Objectively

If you were meeting this person for the first time, what would you think? Would you still be as impressed with them? What if you were hearing stories about them from someone else? When you take the emotions and nostalgia and good times out of it, you might find they aren’t as good as you think they are.
