Emily’s January Spire List

emily-raleigh-january-spire-list-2016

January is such an exciting month, am I right? It’s a blank slate. It’s this brand spankin’ new opportunity to create the fulfilling life you want. It’s a time when you can erase your anxieties of the past and look towards the future with your chin up.

As we kick off 2016, we are also kicking off some new columns, content, and contributions here at Spire & Co.

In 2015, I set out to read 30 books in a year (totally influenced by our Editor in Chief, Quincy, who is a super reader), and in the process, I came across so many cool books, products, and experiences. I started buying books off of Amazon in double, knowing I’d be giving one to someone. And then the same thing started happening with products I read about in those books. My best friend, Tori, has always been like this and I guess now I’d caught the bug.

As Spire & Co developed and I got to know you rockstar readers, I started messaging some of you to tell you about things I had read or used that I thought would speak to your soul, too. So as we say goodbye to the first month of 2016, I’m kicking off a brand new series here: the Spire List.

So without further adieu, I have compiled some of my favorite people, experiences, and things that have made the start of 2016 extra abundant.

I was lucky to escape the cold earlier this month, and these sunglasses were the first thing in my bag. Now that I’m back in New York, they are still coming in handy, especially when the wind chill has my eyes tearing. Plus, for each pair you purchase, TOMS will help give sight to someone in need.

2. Joy

This movie defines determination, vision, and strength. The story of Joy Mangano is truly eye opening. Joy gave me so much perspective on the value of the decisions we make now and how they shape our future. If you have a desire to make something happen in 2016, watch this for that extra push.

3. Kenneth Cole Seamed Leggings

It’s winter. It’s cold. You have a lot going on. These pants are crazy comfortable, very versatile, and super flattering. And that’s coming from a girl who is 4’11’’. No legging exactly has my name on it. Except for these. I’ve lived in these this month.

4. You Are A Badass: How To Stop Doubting Your Greatness And Start Living An Awesome Life by Jen Sincero

If I could purchase this book for every person on the planet I would. It is quite simply a game changer for your outlook on life, others, and most importantly, yourself.

5. Clarisonic Mia 2

I’m not the kind of girl who is beauty-obsessed. I like things that are quick, easy, and won’t break the bank. With one exception: it has to last me forever. The shopping gods had my back and I got it on sale on QVC. And I love it! I don’t have great skin and in the last few weeks using it, I have yet to break out and my skin looks noticeably better. The best part is, all you have to do is use it with your regular cleanser. Unlike other serums or exfoliators, it doesn’t run out either, making the cost per use low if you use it for a long time.

6. Everyone Cleanser

Like I said, I don’t have great skin and am not into breaking the bank. I started using the Everyone Cleanser after SoulCycle because they had it in their locker rooms and I started noticing a difference in my skin. So I bought some, now put it on my Clarisonic and it works wonders. It is all natural and totally pure, free of all the chemicals that we really shouldn’t put anywhere near our bodies. And the best part? It’s only $10.

7. Sweat With Kayla App

With traveling a lot this month, this app/fitness guide has been my go-to for workouts that will up my energy and make me feel strong. Plus, they are only 28 minutes and require very little equipment. After seeing how much Breck, our Wellness Editor, loved it, I had to try it. Plus, there’s a seriously devoted global community that comes with this workout, which is serious added motivation. My suggestion: do the 7 day trial and see if it’s right for you!

8. Supergirl

This is my favorite show right now. It has a great plot line, a remarkable cast, and Melissa Benoist is fantastic. I think Supergirl’s various relationships, particularly with her sister, serve as such great examples we can all strive towards. If you are looking for something engaging but not scary, thought provoking, and just straight up fun, tune in on Monday nights on CBS.

9. Well + Good

I adore this website. They cover the fitness scene in a way I can’t find anywhere else. Whether you are looking for cute workout clothes, a place to practice group meditation, or where you should take a barre class, Well + Good has your back.
