7 Organizations You Should Volunteer With

Are you looking to volunteer?  Not only does it give you valuable work experience, but you get to give back to your community.  If you need help getting started, these seven organizations are a good place to start.

1. Red Cross

The Red Cross helps people in emergency situations and disaster areas.  There are a variety of ways to volunteer with them: you can help with blood drives, in hospitals, schools, or even on social media.   All you have to do is go on their site and plug in your zip code to find opportunities.

2. Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit ministry.  They bring affordable and safe housing to people around the world.  When you volunteer with them, you can build, renovate, and repair houses.  You can bring better housing to your local community.  Once again, it is as easy as plugging in your zip code.  There are also service trips and special projects.

3. Big Brothers Big Sisters

This is a great place to volunteer if you love kids.  They match adults volunteers – Bigs – and kids ages 6 through 18 – Littles.  Big Brothers Big Sisters has operated for over a century.  It is the largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network.  Their mission is to provide kids facing adversity with strong mentors and their vision is that all children achieve success.  Find a location near you.

4. Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels is the oldest and largest national organization.  They are dedicated to bringing meals to seniors dealing with hunger and isolation.  Use this tool to locate programs in your area.  It is in nearly every community in the country, so you are bound to find something.

5. YMCA

The YMCA is a nonprofit in 10,000 neighborhoods in the country.  They believe that social change is community centered.  You can give back by coaching sports teams for kids, teaching classes, raising funds, and more!  Find your Y.

6. Petfinder

Passionate about animals?  Petfinder connects you to local shelters, rescue groups, and disaster relief.  It also has valuable information on puppy mills and animal cruelty so you can educate yourself and others.

7. Girl Scouts

When helping the Girl Scouts, you mentor girls in a safe and fun environment.  Mentors guide the next generation of girls to future success.  Enter your zip code to find opportunities.
